Invest, Save, Spend ... Who Knows?

We get income and it seems to go to someone really fast. Do we have savings or investment goals, like paying to send a child to school, buying a house, a car, an iPhone, a new wardrobe, funding a wedding, a vacation, etc.? Do the goals keep us on track or are they just like well intentioned New Year resolutions?
